Workforce Development and Training Opportunities

Our MARS (Maintenance and Renovation Services) program provides participants with the opportunity to develop valuable hands-on skills in agricultural equipment maintenance, repair, fabrication, welding, painting, and equipment restoration. These technical skills are developed through real-world work experience in a production environment that mirrors industry standards and expectations. PRI’s MARS program provides on-site fabrication, welding, and repair of agricultural equipment, allowing participants to gain practical experience while supporting essential operations.

Inmate workers gain experience working on tractors, implements, heavy equipment, and other agricultural machinery used throughout Florida’s agricultural industry. Through equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, mechanical repairs, surface preparation, painting, and refurbishment projects, participants build a strong foundation in the skills needed to support today’s equipment maintenance and service workforce.

The work performed through MARS helps develop critical workplace competencies including problem-solving, technical troubleshooting, safety awareness, teamwork, communication, time management, and attention to detail. Participants may also have opportunities to pursue industry-recognized certifications such as OSHA 10, OSHA 30, Forklift Operator Certification, welding credentials, and other workforce development training designed to prepare them for employment after release.

The demand for skilled maintenance technicians, equipment mechanics, welders, and heavy equipment service professionals remains strong across the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians, including those who maintain and repair agricultural and industrial equipment, is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, with thousands of job openings expected each year. The continued need for equipment maintenance, infrastructure improvements, agricultural production, and retiring skilled workers has created ongoing opportunities for trained individuals entering these career fields.

By combining technical training with real-world work experience, the MARS program helps participants develop marketable skills that can support post-release employment opportunities in agricultural equipment maintenance, diesel technology, welding and fabrication, machinery repair, industrial maintenance, fleet maintenance, manufacturing, and construction-related industries.

Industry Certifications & Credentials

One of the most important aspects of the program is the opportunity for inmate workers to earn specialized certifications that demonstrate professional competency. Below are all of the certifications they can earn while in the program.

Forklift Operator

Issued by: OSHA

Forklift Operator Certification ensures participants are trained to safely operate material-handling equipment used to transport tractors, attachments, parts, and heavy agricultural equipment. For MARS professionals, this certification supports workplace safety, OSHA compliance, efficient equipment handling, and the successful completion of maintenance and renovation projects.

OSHA 10 & 30

Issued by: American Safety Council/Certus

The OSHA 10-Hour and 30-Hour Certifications provide MARS professionals with essential workplace safety training for agricultural equipment maintenance and renovation projects. The OSHA 10-Hour course builds foundational knowledge in hazard recognition, safe work practices, and OSHA standards, while the OSHA 30-Hour course provides advanced safety training for supervisors and skilled technicians. Together, these certifications support regulatory compliance, effective hazard management, and safer operations in industrial work environments.

P1 G6-SMAW Welding

Issued by: American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

The P1 6G-SMAW Welding Certification validates advanced pipe welding skills using Shielded Metal Arc Welding, commonly known as stick welding, in the challenging 6G position. This credential demonstrates the ability to produce high-quality welds in multiple positions used in industrial fabrication, manufacturing, construction, and equipment repair.

Welding Code Steel 3G & 4G Steel MIG/TIG

Issued by: WeldTest Services, LLC

This welding certification demonstrates proficiency in MIG and TIG welding techniques on steel in the vertical 3G and overhead 4G positions. Participants develop the skills needed to produce quality welds for industrial fabrication, construction, manufacturing, and equipment repair applications.

Welding Code 3G & 4G Sheet Steel MIG/TIG

Issued by: WeldTest Services, LLC

This certification focuses on welding sheet steel using MIG and TIG processes in the vertical 3G and overhead 4G positions. Participants develop the precision, equipment control, and welding techniques needed for metal fabrication, manufacturing, equipment restoration, and repair projects.

Diesel Preventative Maintenance Mechanic

Issued by: Palm Beach State College

This hands-on diesel mechanic training course teaches participants how to inspect, maintain, and service diesel-powered equipment using recommended preventative maintenance practices. Training includes equipment inspections, oil analysis, tool use, shop safety, maintenance scheduling, and workplace readiness skills for careers in diesel and heavy equipment maintenance.

Basic Mechanics

Issued by: TPC Training Systems

This course introduces fundamental mechanical concepts used in industrial maintenance, equipment repair, and manufacturing. Participants learn how mechanical components and machinery operate while developing foundational troubleshooting and maintenance knowledge.

Reading Blueprints for Welders

Issued by: TPC Training Systems

This course teaches participants how to read welding symbols, fabrication drawings, and technical blueprints. These skills help welders accurately interpret project specifications and complete welding and fabrication work according to design requirements.

Intro to Carpentry

Issued by: TPC Training Systems

This introductory carpentry course covers basic construction techniques, building materials, measurement practices, tool use, and workplace safety. Participants develop foundational skills applicable to maintenance, renovation, woodworking, and construction projects.

Reading Blueprints

Issued by: TPC Training Systems

This course develops the ability to interpret technical drawings, dimensions, symbols, and project specifications. Blueprint-reading skills are valuable in manufacturing, construction, industrial maintenance, welding, and equipment repair.

Metals in the Plant

This course introduces the properties, characteristics, and applications of metals commonly used in industrial environments. Participants learn how material selection affects manufacturing, welding, fabrication, maintenance, and repair work.

Welding Principles

Issued by: TPC Training Systems

This foundational welding course introduces welding processes, equipment operation, workplace safety, metal preparation, and weld quality principles. The course helps participants build the technical knowledge needed for welding, metal fabrication, industrial maintenance, and equipment restoration careers.

More Than Maintenance

PRI’s Transition Program helps participants prepare for life after release by connecting them with resources that support employment, education, housing, transportation, and other critical reentry needs. The program is designed to help individuals build stability, overcome barriers and confidently take the next step toward independence and long term success.

By providing practical support and guidance, transition support helps bridge the gap between incarceration and a successful return to the community.
